The Polar Bear holds a prominent place on the corner of Spring Bank and Derringham Street, near the junction with Princes Avenue, one of the most vibrant parts of Hull.

The current pub dates from around 1894, when it was built to replace the original Polar Bear at the end of Park Street, which was burned down when the landlord developed an unfortunate interest in fireworks.

It was named in honour of the nearby Zoological Gardens, which covered most of Spring Bank between 1840 and 1862.

There was once a stuffed Polar Bear located in the rear bar area, though story has it that it was thrown away after years of tobacco smoke turned it brown.
Externally, the large stone plinth overlooking the corner of Derringham Street was added in 1922, when the pub was extended, and the anchors reflects the now-defunct Hull Brewery, which operated the pub at that time.

It is also one of only a couple of pubs in Hull to include a spectacular stained glass dome, which sits above our main stage and provides a stunning setting.

Along with the dome, our curved bar is also a listed feature that defines our main room.
The newest feature of The Polar Bear is a rear terrace, where smokers can pop outside for a cigarette with their drinks and remain in a covered, heated environment.  Access is through the rear bar, which is also used as a room for parties and other functions.
